Sculptra FAQ

Why choose Sculptra Aesthetic?

Sculptra works in a slightly different way than other fillers and toxins. It is designed to stimulate collagen growth and restore lost facial volume over time for a more youthful appearance.

Which areas does Sculptra Aesthetic treat?

Sculptra is used to improve the appearance of deep folds between the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds), the lines framing the mouth (marionette lines), chin wrinkles, and overall facial volume.

How many Sculptra treatments will I need?

Sculptra is usually administered in approximately three treatments about 4 weeks apart. The amount required to achieve results varies depending on each patient’s individual needs. During your consultation, your provider will help you to evaluate your aesthetic goals and determine an appropriate course of treatment.

When will I see my results?

Sculptra Aesthetic is designed to give you noticeable results that emerge gradually and can last more than two years. Most patients report that they look the same a few days after treatment (which is normal and temporary). Because results happen gradually, you’ll see subtle, yet noticeable, results in the reduction of facial wrinkles and folds by comparing images before treatment and a couple months following your final treatment.

Is it safe?

Sculptra Aesthetic is FDA approved in the United States and has been used worldwide since 1999. Sculptra Aesthetic is made of a synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid that is absorbed naturally by the body and has been used for years in dissolvable stitches. Since Sculptra Aesthetic does not contain any human or animal components, no allergy testing is required prior to treatments. Side effects could include injection site pain, redness, bruising, tenderness, minor bleeding or swelling. The types and duration of side effects may vary by individual patient. During your consultation, your provider will discuss all the possible side effects of a Sculptra Aesthetic treatment.

CryoCorrect Precision FAQ

What is the treatment like?

During treatment, age spots, sun spots, and skin tags are removed using a precise flow of carbon dioxide (CO2) which freezes the skin at a milder temperature than traditional cryogens like liquid nitrogen, resulting in a softer, shallower, more comfortable freeze, more likely to leave the surrounding skin intact. The spot or skin tag is quickly frozen for 5-8 seconds. With little to no downtime and minimal discomfort, results can be seen in as little as 1 treatment.

Who can or should receive treatment?

Almost anyone can receive a CryoCorrect Precision Treatment. We recommend that patients with a deeper complexion agree to a test spot prior to treatment. A CryoCorrect Treatment can help men and women remove stubborn age spots and sun spots that remain even after completing a series of facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser treatments. Before receiving a CryoCorrect Treatment, we require a consultation to determine if you are a candidate for the CryoCorrect Precision Treatment. If you have had skin cancer, this treatment is not recommended for you.

How long will it take to see a result?

During a CryoCorrect Treatment the spot or skin tag is quickly frozen and will turn the skin a dark color. This dark color may last between 3-5 days before a scab forms. The scab will slough off between 2-3 weeks, and normal healthy skin will appear. In some cases, the healing process varies between 4-12 weeks.

How many treatments will I need?

CryoCorrect Treatment results can be seen in as little as one treatment with visible improvement in spot appearance in as early as 4 weeks. The CryoCorrect Treatment has been clinically proven to be an effective procedure by completely removing age spots, sun spots, and skin tags in only one treatment.

Are the results permanent?

For most spots, pigment should be gone for good! However, it is possible for pigment to return in larger treatment areas.

What are the aftercare requirements?

You will receive recommendations from your provider following treatment that will include the daily use of sunscreen, an antioxidant, and possibly a pigment correcting serum. These products are essential to preventing future damage and maintaining your results.

Laser Skin Resurfacing FAQ

Does laser skin resurfacing leave scars?

If performed by a qualified, licensed practitioner, laser skin resurfacing should not result in any scarring.

Is laser skin resurfacing right for me?

Laser skin resurfacing is a procedure with few risks, but it is important to carefully evaluate any risk factors, and to understand what the procedure can do, and what it can’t. Because laser resurfacing only works on the outer layers of skin, it is not effective for deep scars or deep wrinkles.

Laser resurfacing is not usually recommended for patients who have used Accutane in the past two years, or for anyone suffering from skin eruptions such as herpes, psoriasis, or eczema. Patients who are susceptible to excessive scarring or keloids should inform their practitioner and discuss whether the procedure is appropriate.

What are risks involved in laser skin resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing does have some minor risks associated with it. In some rare cases, patients will experience some temporary discoloration. This can usually be cleared up within a couple of months using bleaching creams. An even smaller number of patients may experience prolonged redness and sensitivity in the treated area.

Patients with dark olive or brown skin tones are at an enhanced risk for pigmentation problems as a result of skin resurfacing procedures. It is important to review your family history and your skin type with your surgeon before deciding on the procedure.

SkinPen Microneedling FAQ

Why choose SkinPen?

As the only FDA-cleared microneedling device, SkinPen sets the industry standard for safety. It’s minimally invasive, stimulates your skin’s own ability to repair itself, and has little to no downtime associated with treatments.

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients start with a minimum of three treatments, four weeks apart. Your provider may recommend additional treatments depending on your desired outcome and individual skin type.

How does it work?

SkinPen creates hundreds to thousands of “micro” skin punctures per second to stimulate the skin’s natural wound healing process – inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling – to prompt tissue remodeling without causing scar tissue formation. Most patients can return to normal activities within 24 hours.

Does it hurt?

Though your SkinPen treatment could be tolerable without the need for medication, we aim to provide a calm and comfortable experience for our patients at the Centre for Pure Skin. As a result we provide each patient with a numbing cream prior to their appointment. This cream has been tested and specially formulated to ensure your treatment is virtually painless. You should plan on arriving to your appointment approximately 30 minutes early to allow enough time for the cream to be applied.

Is it safe?

Yes, by design. SkinPen’s patent-pending – and single-use – sterile needle cartridge is built with safety in mind. SkinPen is also surrounded by a proprietary BioSheath that acts as a barrier to prevent cross contamination between procedures. No other manufacturer can make that claim, which is part of the reason SkinPen by Bellus Medical is the only FDA-cleared microneedling device. As a medical practice, we are required to meet the highest standards of health and safety which is why we chose SkinPen as our microneedling device.

Do I really need to use the skin care products that come with my SkinPen package?

Yes, home care is very important to your result. The products that we include in your package have been carefully selected and clinically proven to enhance your results. They have been formulated to aid in the wound healing process and to protect your skin from further damage following treatment.

There are very few patients who are not candidates for SkinPen treatments. Unlike some alternatives, SkinPen has been clinically proven to be effective for women and men with skin ranging from light to very dark. Absolute contraindications include; skin cancer; scleroderma, collagen vascular disease or cardiac abnormalities; blood clotting problems; active bacterial or fungal infection; immunosuppression. We recommend scheduling a consultation with one of our expert providers to determine if SkinPen is right for you.

Laser Hair Removal FAQ

Does it hurt?

Most patients report minimal to mild discomfort with their laser hair removal treatments. However, the level of discomfort varies by each individual patient’s tolerance. A laser hair removal treatment feels much like a warm rubber band snapping against the skin. For patients that are concerned with pain, we prescribe a numbing spray that can be applied before treatments.

Why do I need a series of treatments to achieve results?

Laser hair removal works best when hair follicles are in their mature stage, however, at any given time, your hair is in various stages of growth. Because hair grows in cycles, multiple sessions are required to effectively remove all the hair in any given area.

How many sessions are required?

With each treatment, hair is reduced and best results are observed after four to six sessions. The number of sessions will differ depending on your hair color, hair type, body area, and skin tone. Once the recommended sessions are completed, patients may still elect to receive “touch up” treatments as needed.

How often do I need to receive treatments?

Because each patient has individual needs, each laser hair removal treatment plan is different. However, consistency is key! For the best result it’s important that patients follow the recommendations made by their aesthetician.

Which areas of the body can be treated?

Laser hair removal can be safely used on most areas of the body that have unwanted hair. Most commonly treated areas include: bikini, legs, arms, chest, back, shoulders, stomach, neck, chin and sideburns.

Is laser hair removal good for everyone?

While it’s true that ideal candidates for laser hair removal posses darker hair with lighter pigmented skin, most skin types can be treated. We recommend that you schedule a consultation with one of our aestheticians to determine if laser hair removal is right for you.

Are Laser Hair Removal results permanent?

For most patients, results are permanent. However, there is always the possibility for new hair growth due to bodily changes (i.e. hormones during pregnancy, etc). For questions about our laser hair removal treatment packages, please contact us at 616.454.1256.

How is the treatment performed?

It’s a relatively quick and easy procedure performed right in the office. We will include time in your appointment for your blood to be drawn and then spun in a centrifuge to separate the out platelet rich plasma. The tiny micro “injuries” created during the treatment will allow the PRP solution to absorb into your skin deeper for better results.

Most patients start with a minimum of three treatments, four weeks apart. Your provider may recommend additional treatments depending on your desired outcome and individual skin type.

How long does it take to see results?

CoolSculpting FAQ

Am I a candidate for CoolSculpting?

The CoolSculpting fat-reduction procedure is specially designed for those who have unwanted fat in targeted areas. It’s not a weight loss procedure and is terrific for people who are maintaining a healthy weight that they are comfortable with. The best candidates for the CoolSculpting procedure are looking for a non-surgical alternative to liposuction that will reduce noticeable pockets of unwanted fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.

How do I know if surgery is the better option?

While the CoolSculpting procedure will reduce fat in the treated area, it will not correct issues like very loose skin, deep stretch marks, or muscle separation. Potential patients are encouraged to explore our before and after gallery, so that they can see the difference in the results of a CoolSculpting treatment and surgical options such as a tummy tuck. At the Centre for Plastic Surgery, our main goal is for you to achieve the results that you desire. We are fortunate to be able to offer our patients both surgical and non-surgical options on site for the best possible outcome.

How long is the treatment? How many treatments will I need?

During your consultation your CoolSculpting provider will help you create an individualized treatment plan tailored to your specific goals. The length of your CoolSculpting treatment will vary depending on the number of areas being treated during one visit. The latest technology of CoolSculpting can treat one area in 35-60 minutes. However, some patients chose to have more than one treatment during the same office visit which accounts for a longer treatment time.

Can the CoolSculpting procedure reduce fat anywhere on my body?

The CoolSculpting procedure is FDA-cleared for the treatment of visible fat bulges in the some of the most common areas that stubborn fat tends to collect. Those areas are the upper and lower abdomen, flanks (love-handles), inner and outer thighs, bra line fat, back fat, submental (chin) area, upper arms, and underneath the buttocks (also known as banana roll).

Are the results permanent? Where does the fat go?

Once the treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), they die and are naturally processed and eliminated from the body through the lymphatic system (which means you will typically expel them through sweat or urine). When they are gone, they are gone for good.

What happens if I gain weight after my CoolSculpting procedure?

Many people, after seeing the results from their CoolSculpting procedure, feel even more motivated to stay close to their ideal weight. However, if you do gain weight, you may gain it evenly all over your body including the treated areas but the fat cells in those areas will still be reduced. Therefore, patients that do gain weight before they achieve their final result will not be able to appreciate the results as much as those who maintain their weight following treatment. Click here to learn more about fat cells and weight loss.

Is the CoolSculpting procedure safe?

The CoolSculpting procedure is FDA-cleared for the treatment of visible fat bulges in more areas than any other non-invasive fat reduction treatment on the market. As the #1 non-invasive fat reduction procedure and with millions of CoolSculpting procedures performed worldwide, it is proven to be a safe and effective treatment.

Will I experience any “downtime”?

The CoolSculpting procedure is completely non-surgical, so typically you can return to normal activities immediately. Patients often return to work on the same day after a CoolSculpting treatment is completed. Some patients may experience mild swelling and tenderness in the treated area (especially in the abdomen) for up to three weeks following the procedure. We often recommend that patients take that into consideration when scheduling their treatments.

What does it feel like?

As the cooling begins during the first few minutes, you typically feel intense cold. This soon dissipates. With some applicators, you’ll feel some pulling as suction is applied. The area generally goes numb within 5 to 10 minutes during treatment. Many people read, watch videos, work on their laptop, or even take a nap during their CoolSculpting treatment. After the treatment, you may feel some tingling and slight discomfort as the area is massaged for 2 minutes. Patients are usually able to return to normal activities following their appointment.

Are there any side effects?

During the procedure you may experience sensations of pulling, tugging, mild pinching, intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching, and cramping at the treatment site. These sensations subside as the area becomes numb. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, or skin sensitivity. With the chin, patients may experience the sensation of fullness in the back of the throat after treatment. These effects are temporary and generally resolve within days or weeks. Though rare, some additional side effects may occur. As with any medical procedure, ask your provider if the CoolSculpting procedure is right for you.

How much does it cost?

The price for CoolSculpting procedures varies by patient depending on your areas of concern, the number of treatments needed, and your ultimate goals. Most patients at the Centre for Plastic Surgery opt to treat multiple areas, but each person is different. We are more than happy to accommodate your individual needs and create a plan that works for you and your budget. We also offer several financing options with flexible payment plans. Lip Filler FAQ

1. What are lip fillers used for?

Lip fillers are used in the process of lip augmentation which is a cosmetic procedure that enhances the size and shape of the lips. At the Centre for Plastic Surgery our team of highly skilled clinicians utilize a variety of injectable fillers that temporarily boost the shape, size, structure, and/ or texture of the lips.

2. How do I know my lips will look natural?

Our clinicians have undergone years of intensive training and injected hundreds of patients to ensure that lips are skillfully enhanced with an end result that is appropriately proportioned to the facial features. During a lip augmentation consultation, the injector will listen carefully to the patient as they explain their concerns and aesthetic goals. Many patients choose to bring a picture to their consultation that shows the look they desire. The injection specialist will then recommend the product and injection technique that will facilitate the best result.

3. How is lip augmentation with fillers performed?

Fillers are administered by a highly-qualified injector in a series of methodically placed, minimally invasive injections that take less than an hour. The products used are infused with Lidocaine to make the experience comfortable for the patient. However, if a patient is still concerned about discomfort at the injection site we encourage them to arrive to their appointment a few minutes early to apply a topical numbing cream.

4. What are lip fillers made of? How long do they last?

Fillers for the lips such as Restylane Silk and Juvederm Volbella are made up of water-loving Hyaluronic Acid molecules. HA is found naturally in the body and is known for its ability to attract and hold water in the cell replenishing moisture. Because of those properties, HA fillers are the perfect option for increasing volume in the lips. The effects typically last six to nine months at which point patients will need to return for additional injections to achieve their desired look again.

5. What if I don’t like my results?

It’s not uncommon for patients to experience a little anxiety when seeking aesthetic treatments. It may take up to two weeks for a patient to realize their final result. It’s our recommendation that patients wait at least 10-14 days before seeking any additional lip treatments. At that point, if a patient wishes to increase the volume of the lips they may want to consider additional injections. If a patient feels that the lips are too full, it is possible for the treatment to be reversed by the injection specialist.

6. If I stop getting injections, will my lips look different?

No. Once a patient discontinues lip injections, the lips will go back to their pre-treatment size and shape.

Eyelash Extensions FAQ

Why should I choose eyelash extensions?

Each eyelash extension set is custom made by our expert eyelash specialist to each individual person’s wants and needs with many different types of extension materials, shapes, lengths, and densities to create your desired eyelash look. They typically last around four weeks, and require very little maintenance. Patients that choose eyelash extensions love that their eyes are defined, youthful, and do not required the use of irritating mascara or heavy makeup to create drama.

How long do they last?

Eyelash extensions will stay on your lashes for your remaining natural lash life. Most individuals typically shed about one eyelash per day with new eyelashes growing to replace them during a 30- 45 day growth cycle. With attentive care, clients can expect eyelash extensions to require maintenance approximately every four weeks.

Who is a good candidate for eyelash extensions?

Most people are great candidates for eyelash extensions! Individuals that have a weakened immune system due to severe illness, an unusual sensitivity or skin reaction to cyanoacrylate-based adhesives, alopecia, or any skin disease in the eye area are not good candidates. Patients that have recently received an injectable treatment near the brow or forehead area should wait at least 10 days for an eyelash extension application.

Will extensions harm my natural lashes?

Not at all! The most important part of having eyelash extensions applied is choosing a highly trained and certified lash artist like ours at the Centre for Pure Skin. The eyelash adhesives that we utilize have been extensively tested, dry soft, and allow the eyelash extensions to stay flexible and bouncy just like your own natural lashes. Plus, the application technique used by our certified lash artist allows natural lashes to grow and thrive by not disrupting the natural growth cycle.

Can I continue to wear mascara?

Mascara is typically not needed and not recommended for use with eyelash extensions. Mascara should only be used when a touch-up is drawing near. Constant use of mascara may shorten the lifespan of lash extensions. Waterproof mascara is never recommended for use, as it will interrupt the adhesive bond with your natural lashes.

How should I prepare for my lash appointment?

Please remove all eye makeup before your appointment and make sure that lashes are very clean. Taking out contact lenses is recommended but not mandatory. Please avoid caffeine and over-hydration prior to the appointment. You should expect to be laying down for two hours without breaks.

If you are pregnant or nursing or have a history of neuromuscular diseases, wrinkle reducers are not for you. Please contact us with any questions or concerns regarding your eligibility for Botox or Dysport treatments.

Where can wrinkle reducers be used?

The typical indications for Botox and Dysport include the glabella (the area between the eyebrows), forehead, and crow’s feet. However, at the Centre for Plastic Surgery our certified injection specialists may recommend a treatment plan that could address:

  • Upper lip lines
  • Toothy/Gummy Smile Frowny mouth (down turned corners of the mouth)
  • Eyebrow lift
  • “Bunny” nose lines
  • Lower eyelid wrinkles
  • Chin dimples
  • Neck creases and wrinkles
  • Hyperhydrosis (sweating palms and arm pits)

How long will it take? Will it be painful?

Botox and Dysort can be injected very quickly. Most treatments require less than 30 minutes. Patients typically describe a slight “pricking” sensation during the treatment with very little to no pain or discomfort after.

Are wrinkle reducers (neurotoxins) like Botox and Dysport safe?

While they are considered safe, it’s very important for patients to understand the possible side effects and risks involved. At the Centre for Plastic Surgery, our highly trained clinicians will carefully review your medical history to ensure that a neurotoxin treatment is right for you.

When can I expect to see results?

Most patients begin to see results in 3-5* days. However, it’s possible that some patients may experience a delayed response of up to two weeks. Contact us if you have any questions or concerns following your treatment. We are more than happy to accommodate your needs.

How long will the results of my treatment last?

The benefits of wrinkle reducers like Botox or Dysport last on average between three to four months. However, results may vary from patient to patient.

What is the most common side effect of a wrinkle reducing treatment?

Very occasionally patients will experience minor swelling or bruising following treatment.

What are the other risks and complications I should be aware of?

Complications from neurotoxin treatments are very rare, but our injection specialists will go over all possible risks during your consultation.

Dermal Filler FAQ

1. What exactly are “fillers?”

Dermal fillers are used to treat areas of the face that have lost volume throughout time. They can smooth creases, lift folds, and contour areas that are flat or hollow. Fillers are administered through a series of injections, similar to Botox. Simply put, they fill!

2. What do they consist of?

The majority of fillers offered at Centre for Plastic Surgery consist of hyaluronic acid, a water loving sugar molecule that is naturally found in the body. Hyaluronic acid is the main component of fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Belotero. We also offer calcium hydroxylapatite (known as Radiesse) which is a calcium-based solution and Sculptra Aesthetic which is a Poly-L-Latic Acid based filler that stimulates collagen production. You and your injection specialist will determine the ideal filler for your needs. This decision is based the desired area of correction and expected longevity of the product.

3. What areas can be treated with fillers?

Fillers can be placed anywhere that volume has been lost. Common areas include the cheeks, temples, nasolabial folds, lips, marionette lines, and tear troughs.

4. How long do they last?

Longevity depends on the filler selected, the area treated, and the individual patient. The Centre for Plastic surgery offers fillers that last anywhere from 9 months to 5 years depending on the filler used.

5. What are the risks?

As a minimally invasive option, the risks of dermal fillers are low. The most common risk is bruising which will generally resolve after a few days. Discomfort is minimal, as you can be pre-treated with topical numbing cream. While risk of allergic reaction is very rare, make sure to inform your injection specialist of any allergies you may have.

6. What do fillers cost?

Treatment cost depends on the product selected and amount used. Most patients require two to four syringes of filler to achieve full correction. Click HERE to visit our price estimator and find out what an average patient at the Centre for Pure Skin pays for a dermal filler treatment.

7. Will it be obvious I have had something done?

Results from dermal fillers are immediate, and your treatment can be as subtle or dramatic as you choose based on the volume of product used. Although bruising is usually minimal, it is always a potential risk; therefore, it is not wise to get treated immediately before a big event.

If you still have questions or are unsure dermal fillers are right for you, we encourage you to set up a consultation to meet your Grand Rapids Injection Specialist and talk through your concerns.
