What is a chemical peel?

Chemical peels utilize a variety of acidic peeling agents, producing a controlled injury to the skin which promotes new skin growth and an improved appearance. Common ingredients include glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid, salicylic acid and resorcinol.

Why should I choose a chemical peel?

Chemical peels treat a wide variety of common skin concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, photodamage (discoloration from the sun), scarring, freckles, age spots and melasma. There are a number of different types of peels and intensity levels that can be selected to treat your specific needs.

Does it hurt to have a chemical peel?

With most chemical peels, patients report little to no discomfort. However, there are many different types of peels, and some can create an uncomfortable sensation on the skin both during and after treatment. During your initial consultation, your provider will walk you through what to expect during your procedure.

What kind of downtime should I expect?

Downtime associated with chemical peels varies according to which type of treatment is received. Many patients will experience some redness and flaking of the skin following a chemical peel, but many do not. Further downtime depends on many factors such as the skin concern being treated, the patient’s tolerance to the peel, and the chemical formulation of the peel. During your consultation, your provider will discuss the different chemical peel options as well as the common side effects following those treatments.

How many treatments will I need?

Some peels are used as part of a regular skin care regimen. Others are utilized in a more condition specific manor, or as part of a targeted skin care package. We recommend you schedule a consultation with one of our expert providers to determine which type of chemical peel treatment is right for you.

When will I see results?

Most patients report they begin to see results within the first few days following treatment, with the most noticeable results about two weeks post procedure. It’s important to remember that each peel is different, individual treatment plans are different, and individual results may be different.*

Do I need to do anything at home after my chemical peel?

At the very least, we recommend you apply a good broad spectrum sunscreen every day to avoid any further damage to the skin. At the Centre for Pure Skin, we offer a variety of hand selected, clinically tested and physician dispensed skin care products.
