Fears About Fillers? Let’s Face Facts.
We have discussed some the common myths and misconceptions about Botox injections, but what about fillers? Second only to Botox injections, fillers are on the rise as one of the most popular cosmetic treatments to reverse the effects of aging. According to the Huffington Post, 1.9 million treatments with dermal fillers are now seen per year, up from only 650,000 in 2000. Let’s take a look at this rapidly growing method of non-invasive age correction and answer some questions commonly heard by our Injection Specialists.
1. First of all, what do we mean by “fillers?”
Dermal fillers are used to treat areas of the face that have lost volume throughout time. They can smooth creases, lift folds, and contour areas that are flat or hollow. Fillers are administered through a series of injections, similar to Botox. Simply put, they fill!
2. What do they consist of?
The majority of fillers offered at Centre for Plastic Surgery consist of hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule and naturally found in the body’s collagen. Hyaluronic acid is found in fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm. We also offer calcium hydroxylapatite (known as Radiesse) which is a calcium-based solution.
You and your injection specialist will determine the ideal filler for your needs. This decision is based the desired area of correction and expected longevity of the product.
3. What areas can be treated with fillers?
Fillers can be placed anywhere that volume has been lost. Common areas include the cheeks, temples, nasolabial folds, lips, marionette lines, and tear troughs.
4. How long do they last?
Longevity depends on the filler selected, the area treated, and the individual patient. As a rule of thumb, fillers last longer in areas with less movement. Most filler placed in the lips will last, on average, 6 months. Filler in the cheeks, temples and nasolabial folds will generally last 12-18 months.
5. What are the risks?
As a minimally invasive option, the risks of dermal fillers are low. The most common risk is bruising which will generally resolve after a few days. Discomfort is minimal, as you can be pretreated with topical numbing cream. While risk of allergic reaction is very rare, make sure to inform your injection specialist of any allergies you may have.
6. What do fillers cost?
Treatment cost depends on the product selected and amount used. One syringe of filler costs anywhere between $500-$600. The average patient will require 2-4 syringes depending on their needs and number of areas treated.
7. Will it be obvious I have had something done?
Results from dermal fillers are immediate, and your treatment can be as subtle or dramatic as you choose based on the volume of product used. Although bruising is usually minimal, it is always a potential risk; therefore, it is not wise to get treated immediately before a big event.
