Laser Hair Removal Treatment

in Grand Rapids, MI

Laser hair removal is a targeted treatment that uses concentrated light energy to reduce unwanted hair. Using advanced technology — including the LightSheer™ Diode Laser and Inmode Diolaze™ — the laser emits light that is absorbed by the pigment in each hair follicle. The brief pulse of energy vaporizes the pigment, disabling the follicle and significantly slowing or stopping hair regrowth.

About the Laser Hair Removal Treatment

While complete hair removal isn’t guaranteed for every patient, at a minimum, hair that regrows is typically thinner, lighter, and grows back more slowly.

To achieve the best results, a series of sessions is necessary. The exact number of treatments depends on factors like hair density, hair color, the treatment area, and your individual response. Your practitioner will create a personalized plan to help you achieve your desired outcome. Follow-up maintenance sessions may also be needed to address any new hair growth.

Potential Side Effects of Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a well-established treatment, but it does carry some risks and expected after-effects. Common side effects include:

  • Discomfort during treatment — most people experience a mild to moderate sensation, similar to a brief snap or warmth on the skin
  • A sunburn or “razor burn” feeling after treatment that typically fades within a few hours
  • Fine crusting over treated areas, especially where many dark hairs were present — this usually clears within a few days

While uncommon, other side effects like temporary skin lightening or darkening can occur, though these usually resolve on their own. Scarring is rare but possible, especially if you’re prone to it. Blistering is very unlikely, but please contact our office immediately if you notice this or any other unusual signs, such as infection. Your safety is our priority, so don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Before Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

A little preparation before your appointment goes a long way toward protecting your skin and getting the best possible results:

  • Shave the treatment areas before your appointment — this ensures accurate treatment timing. If you cannot reach certain areas, let your provider know in advance
  • Protect the treated area from sun exposure in the weeks leading up to your session — sun exposure increases your risk of pigmentation changes and other complications
  • Protective eyewear will be provided — you will be asked to wear protective glasses throughout the procedure to shield your eyes from laser energy

After Care Tips for Laser Hair Removal

After your session, a consistent aftercare routine is essential for healing and maximising your results. While we will provide you with specific aftercare instructions tailored to your treatment, here are some general tips to help you plan for your recovery:

  • Soothe the Area: It’s normal to experience some temporary redness and discomfort, similar to a sunburn. Use cool compresses and aloe vera gel to soothe the treated skin.
  • Cleanse Gently: For the first few days, wash the treated area with a mild, gentle soap.
  • Adjust Your Skincare: Avoid using products with active ingredients like glycolic acid or retinoids for at least 4–5 days after your session.
  • Wear SPF: Sun protection is crucial for at least 4–6 weeks after every treatment. Always apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors.
  • Let the Skin Heal Naturally: Resist the urge to pluck, rub, or scratch the treated area. The treated hairs will shed on their own. If the area feels itchy, an over-the-counter anti-itch cream can help.

Following these tips will support the healing process and help you achieve the best possible outcome.
