All About RF Microneedling: Unveil the Secret to Radiant Skin
December 17, 2024
We all want clear, youthful skin…but are all of the anti-aging creams and acne scarring treatments truly enough? The radio frequency (RF) microneedling treatment may just be your saving grace. Minimally invasive and with lasting results, RF microneedling is an innovative solution to smoothing facial wrinkles, texture, scarring, discoloration, and tightening for a gorgeous complexion. Discover what the treatment is, how it works, recovery details, and if it might be the right choice for you.
What is RF Microneedling?
Using small needles and radio frequency waves (hence the RF abbreviation), RF microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that revitalizes the skin. The needle creates small wounds, which triggers collagen and elastin production. The damaged skin then grows back thicker and smoother, limiting the visibility of imperfections. The difference with RF treatments is the additional radio frequency waves delivered deep into your skin along with the needle, which helps to magnify lasting results.
At the Centre for Pure Skin, we are pleased to offer Morpheus8, which is a specific form of RF microneedling. What sets Morpheus8 apart is its variable depth pin tips and its ability to penetrate into deeper layers of the skin, allowing the device to treat the thicker skin/tissue of your body in addition to your face.
What Are the Benefits of RF Microneedling?
People often seek the RF microneedling treatment to reverse the effects of aging or scarring in their face to gain a newfound confidence in their appearance. The primary benefit of RF microneedling is the ease with which you’re able to achieve smoothened facial features. As the procedure is quick and minimally invasive, RF microneedling is a fairly simple way to improve the visibility of facial wrinkles and scarring. While facial injections and topical products are also popular choices for skin rejuvenation, RF microneedling offers longer-lasting results by working deep within the layers of skin to actually improve the health of the skin.
How Does RF Microneedling Work?
When you arrive for your microneedling appointment, your provider will begin by cleansing your face and applying an anesthetic to numb the area. From there, the RF microneedling device will be used to create small wounds in your skin while waves of RF energy heat the area triggering accelerated collagen and elastin production.
Depending on the specific areas being treated, the procedure will take between 45-90 minutes. To achieve full results, RF microneedling is split into multiple sessions that are four weeks apart. Each treatment area requires a minimum of three sessions, however additional sessions may be required for optimal results.
What is the Recovery Process for RF Microneedling?
RF microneedling is an outpatient procedure, so you are free to leave as soon as the treatment is complete. After receiving a microneedling treatment, you’ll enter a downtime period. The typical downtime needed for microneedling holes to heal is 1-2 days. During this time, you should avoid sun exposure, as well as applying makeup and other facial topicals.
It is not uncommon to experience tenderness and swelling as your open wounds heal. During this time, you can apply ice packs and start to use a gentle facial cleanser after 24 hours. You should plan to be diligent about applying SPF daily as your skin will be extra sensitive to sun exposure which can negatively affect your results. Three to six months after your last treatment, you’ll begin to reach optimal results. The cosmetic benefits will be at their height for approximately a year; after that point, maintenance sessions are recommended intermittently to maintain your improved appearance.
Who is the Ideal Candidate for RF Microneedling?
While RF microneedling is a safe and relatively non-invasive procedure, some people are a better fit for the treatment than others. RF microneedling may be the right choice if you are over the age of 18, in good health, and are not experiencing any skin infections/breakouts at the time of treatment. RF microneedling is not recommended for people who have chronic skin diseases, are pregnant, are taking medications like Accutane, or are under immunosuppression through treatments like chemotherapy or radiation.
