Under Eye Rejuvenation – Surgical and Non-Surgical

Facial Injections

May 1, 2013

What causes “bags” under the eyes?

As we age it is not uncommon for fullness under the eyes to become more prominent. This occurs because fat pushes against weaker eyelid muscles, and can contribute to a face that looks tired and prematurely aged. A redistribution of cheek fat below the eyelid can accentuate the fullness, and the result is a crease extending from the inner aspect of the eyelid to the cheek, often referred to as a “tear-trough.”

What are the surgical options for eyes?

A surgical procedure called Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty (or Eyelid Lift) has been a common solution for many years to remove excess skin and fat under the eyes, and address muscle weakness. This procedure is performed under sedation in our Accredited Surgical Facility and results in long-lasting improvement in the contour of the lower eyelid. However, surgery is not always appropriate, as many people have concerns regarding the length of recovery.

What are the non-surgical options for the eyes?

Over the last few years, a less invasive procedure for this area has become quite popular and has also been shown to dramatically reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. Rather than removing the skin and fat, a hyaluronic acid based injectable filler such as Restylane® is used to fill and shape the under-eye area. Tear-trough filling , like Botox, is a “lunch-time” procedure. The results are instant and last between 6 and 12 months. There may be some bruising and/or mild swelling but these normally disappear in around a week.
