HA Fillers

in Grand Rapids, MI

These injectable gels like Restylane® and RHA® naturally restore lost volume and smooth out contours, making them a great option for rejuvenating the hands or correcting dips and divots in various areas of the body.

About HA Fillers

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance already found in your body’s soft tissues. When used as a filler, it adds volume, smooths moderate wrinkles, and enhances the overall appearance of treated areas.

After injection, HA attracts water and gently expands, which means you may see results continue to improve over several days to weeks. It’s important to know that HA fillers are not permanent — your body will gradually absorb the material over time, and results will vary from person to person.

Potential Side Effects of HA Fillers

Like any injectable treatment, HA fillers carry some risks. Common side effects include:

  • Swelling, bruising, or tenderness at the injection site — these typically fade within a few days but may last up to a week or longer
Itching or discoloration around the treated area
  • Visible lumps or temporary asymmetry following injection
  • Infection, though sterile equipment and standard precautions are always used

In rare cases, more serious complications can occur, including granulomas (scar lumps), pustule formation (which may require oral corticosteroids or additional treatment), or accidental injection into a blood vessel. This last complication can cause tissue damage and, in very rare cases, serious events such as stroke, heart attack, or blindness. If any treated area becomes increasingly hot, red, or painful after your appointment, contact our office right away.

Before Your HA Filler Appointment

To reduce your risk of bruising and support the best possible outcome, please follow these guidelines 5–7 days before your appointment:

  • Avoid vitamins and supplements — especially Omega-3, Vitamin E, Ginseng, Ginkgo Biloba, and St. John’s Wort
  • Avoid aspirin, aspirin-based products, and NSAIDs (such as Advil, Aleve, Motrin, or Excedrin) if it is safe for you to do so
  • Consider taking Arnica supplements two days before your scheduled treatment to help minimize bruising — the topical cream is also recommended

If you have any active infections, severe allergies, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding, please inform your provider before treatment.

After Care Instructions for HA Filler Injections

Following your appointment, these steps will help minimize discomfort, reduce bruising, and keep the product in place:

  • Do not lie down for 4 hours after treatment
  • Do not rub, scratch, or massage the treated area for 24 hours
  • Avoid vigorous exercise, hot tubs, and saunas for 24 hours
  • Wait at least 1 hour before gently applying lotions or sunscreen
  • Apply ice briefly to help manage swelling
  • Use Arnica topical products gently, starting 1 hour after treatment
  • Avoid massages and body treatments for two weeks after your appointment.

If pain is a concern, use acetaminophen (Tylenol) — avoid aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can thin the blood. Results are temporary, and additional treatments will be needed to maintain your desired look.
